Planting Instructions
1. Site Selection:
Choose a sunny to partially shaded location with well-draining soil. Wild Indigo prefers sandy or loamy soil but can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay.
2. Seed Preparation:
For optimal germination, scarify the seeds by lightly sanding them with fine sandpaper or nicking them with a sharp knife. This helps break the seed coat.
3. Stratification (Optional):
Mimic the natural cold cycle by stratifying seeds. Place seeds in moist sand or a paper towel in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 6–8 weeks before planting.
4. Planting Time:
• Fall Planting: Sow seeds directly outdoors in the fall to allow natural cold stratification over winter.
• Spring Planting: If planting in spring, stratify seeds indoors as described above.
5. How to Plant:
• Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in the soil.
• Space seeds 12–18 inches apart or thin seedlings to this spacing after they emerge.
6. Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy during germination, which typically occurs in 2–4 weeks. Once established, Wild Indigo is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering.
7. Care:
• Mulch lightly around the plants to suppress weeds and retain moisture.
• Avoid over-fertilizing, as Wild Indigo thrives in poor to moderate soils.
8. Growth and Maintenance:
This perennial may take a couple of years to reach maturity but will reward you with vibrant blooms every spring. Prune spent flower stalks to encourage healthy growth.
